A frame can do four things for a painting:
Your desire to achieve some of these effects or none determines whether you need to frame a painting or not.
Some types of artwork like landscapes inevitably possess very light and very dark portions. The lightness and darkness of colors are called values. They help our brains comprehend the three-dimensionality of the surrounding environment.
This is the reason why values are very important. When you hang a landscape painting on your wall you have a very light sky and much darker trees, flowers, land, rocks..etc. It is harder for your mind to perceive the canvas as a single element. Here a frame does wonders and makes the canvas look much better as a piece of home decoration.
How do you know if a painting possesses a great difference in color values? You simply take a picture with your phone, turn a black and white filter and here you go. Now you see exactly if the artwork has a big contrast in terms of lightness and darkness. If large portions are close to white and others are close to dark gray or black a frame is a must.
You would also like to frame a painting if it blends too much with the wall. The artwork could possess similar color values as the wall or they could be even similar in terms of tints and saturation. In that case you need to frame the canvas because it simply does not stand out enough.
There are cases when it would be better if the painting is not too visible but if blends too much there is not much meaning in displaying such an artwork in your interior.
A frame could do this for you if what you intend is that. The important thing is to choose a frame that is clearly lighter or darker than the painting. This contrast will immediately draw attention to the piece of art. You could make the effect even stronger if you use complementary colors (green - red / blue - orange / yellow - purple).
For example if the painting could possess mostly blue tints you could choose a frame that is in the spectrum of orange. Have in mind that brown is also a type of orange and this combination could work as well.
You should know that by definition complementary colors create unpleasant feelings for our eyes. But if they are not so saturated they rather attract attention than irritate our perceptions.
A painting frame could be a form of decoration as well. There are frames that possess beautiful rich ornaments that are three dimensional. Such an approach goes well with classic interiors and traditional art like landscapes and portrait paintings.
In such canvases there is more order and harmony. Abstract non figurative canvases usually don’t look well when they are combined with classic frames. The chaotic nature of the abstractions creates too much noise in such cases and neither the art or the frame looks elegant.
You should have in mind that really heavy decorated frames could overpower the painting and steal the focus. After all the artwork itself is what can really transform the look and spirit of your home decor.
When it comes to framing a painting there are two major points - do you want to emphasize the painting as a decorative element and do you think a frame could make the artwork look significantly better. If the answer to both questions is “yes” then you should definitely frame the paintings in your living environment.
